START A PORTFOLIO
Your portfolio is the key element that people will be looking through when looking to hire you as a model. It is intended to show your experience, strengths, weaknesses, potential, and level of confidence, along with a diverse set of looks that will appeal to a broad base of clients.
A strong and complex portfolio includes:
A headshot photo which is a simple but handsome shoulders up snapshot of what an artist typically looks like on a daily basis. It will have a basic backdrop or routine background, be bright and focused on one's eyes, and show all facial features well. It should be true to life and not overly edited or manipulated, and without dramatic effects. Makeup should be natural or very basic, if any. Models should also have their hair, including facial, how they usually appear.
Modeling is an art form, but it is still primarily based in the commercial and advertising business. You want to ensure that you have a portfolio that shows your versatility in terms of editorial looks. This means you want to show you can sell a product in a commercial, appear on the sports page of the newspaper, be photographed to accompany a story in a magazine, or appear on billboard wearing the latest looks from a fashion brand.
Boudoir is French and means a woman’s private room - bedroom, salon, or otherwise. It translates to the most intimate form of photography, maintaining class and civility while being revealing, sexy, and playful. Boudoir does not necessarily mean implied or actual nudity, and it is always done correctly to ensure the comfort of the model and with complete respect to their boundaries. It brings a personal touch to a portfolio, depicting the deepest emotions. All boudoir photography is restricted to models 18 years old and up.
Most of the photography done outdoors is a mix of lifestyle and fashion with a focus on the surrounding environment. Perhaps you will show your strength by powering through blinding snow and gusty winds to make a cold and beautiful photo. You might be smiling in a field of spring flowers, capturing the vibe for the season. Anyone can be thrown into some of the most gorgeous landscapes and make a decent photo, but it is up to you to overwhelm everything else and stay the focus of attention even in the most superb scenes.
One of the most popular summer shoots, swimwear can be more versatile and varied than you might think. It speaks of confidence, mastering your surroundings, knowing how to move your body, and maintaining your composure to set the right style whether you’re laying in the sand or sitting poolside. There is a reason so many pageants have swimwear competitions, and the right shoot can put you in a position to best all of your competition no matter your body type - diversity is what it’s all about!
